The Broadneck site was discovered when a subdivision was proposed. County regulations required the site developer to conduct a study of the site before the development was approved. Recognizing the potential importance of the site, volunteers assisted the then County Archaeologist Al Luckenbach and assistant county archaeologist Esther Doyle Read to conduct data recovery on the site when it was unclear if it could be preserved in situ.
